Gerdman Gallery is pleased to present Inez Jönsson solo exhibition Protagonisterna
Materials and geometry are the anchors of Inez Jönsson’s work. She prepares every element by hand. Colour goes on layer over layer, until it thickens into ridges and grain. A cross-like shape recurs across the work, drawn from the right angles of the stretcher. Nothing sits on top as an image: the elements that usually support a painting become its protagonists.
This new body of work pushes both materiality and geometry further. The surfaces are denser, the grain of the canvas closer to the eye. In the larger works especially, space opens like a double exposure, one image settling behind another. The work moves between abstraction and figuration, holding both at once. Rooms, openings, light: a doorway, a wall, daylight coming in. The palette stays close to the earth, toward clay and vegetation.
