Materials and geometry are the anchors of Inez Jönsson’s work. She prepares every element by hand. Colour goes on layer over layer, until it thickens into ridges and grain. A cross-like shape recurs across the work, drawn from the right angles of the stretcher. Nothing sits on top as an image: the elements that usually support a painting become its protagonists.
Inez Jönsson (b. 1989) lives and works in Stockholm. She graduated with an MFA from The Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm, in 2017. Recent solo exhibitions include Protagonisterna, Gerdman Gallery, Stockholm (2026); Harvest Hair, Public Service Gallery, Stockholm (2025); Nyslaget hår, Jönköpings läns museum, Jönköping (2024); and the Åke Andrén grant exhibition at Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde, Stockholm (2023). Her work has also been shown at the Embassy of Sweden, Tokyo (2022) and The Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, Stockholm (2021), among others. Recent grants include the Åke Andrén Foundation Scholarship (2023) and the Bærtling Scholarship (2021). Her work is held in the public collections of Norrköpings Konstmuseum, the Ståhl Collection, Region Stockholm, Region Uppsala, Region Jönköping and Fondazione Imago Mundi, Treviso, as well as in numerous private collections.
