Note: When you return, you had already been here, Anne Sofie Djernis

Gerdman Gallery is delighted to present Note: when you return, you were already here, Anne Sofie Djernis' second solo exhibition in Stockholm.

Djernis works from a position of productive ambivalence toward painting, taking the medium itself as both subject and site of resistance. Her process begins with existing figurative material, which she transforms through an intensely physical practice. The original source is gradually erased through the act of painting, leaving works that register pressure and rhythm rather than representation. Underlying this is a persistent tension between mind and body, the impulse to control and enforce ideas set against the body's own knowledge. Note: When you return, you had already been here is a further development of this ongoing inquiry into what the body does to a picture, and what, if anything, survives.
